Monday - Jump Rope Jump Start
Some take aways:
love, thoughts, desires and emotions come from our brains
emotional loss activates the same regions of our brain as physical pain (this can over-stimulate the vagus nerve causing nausea, dizziness and physical pain)
when we see a loved one our brain stimulates the release of the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine from the adrenal gland causing our heart to beat faster
heart rates of 250 beats/minute could kill a human but would be tame for a pigmy shrew
animals with a larger surface area to mass ratio (i.e. small animals) generally have a higher metabolism and a higher heart rate
animals of all sizes get about 1 billion heart beats in a lifetime
as a result heart rate and lifespan are inversely correlated, and smaller animals life less long
Stress Response (Fight, Flight or Freeze)
A Mindfulness Activity - Using our "Spidey-Senses"
Students were assigned a random object and asked to use their sense to closely observe things about the object that would easily be overlooked (especially if this was an object that they were already familiar with). To be clear - student's were not asked to use their sense of taste on these objects - but some chose to anyway. After making their observations they gathered into small groups to share their findings.
The take away - while our minds are busy making detailed observations, they are literally full (i.e. mindful) in this moment and unable to dedicated "bandwidth" to the things would would have otherwise been anxious or worried about.
